Martin Brundle to run Jaguar!? [23 Dec 2002|03:46pm]
[ mood | optimistic ]

David Coulthard's manager and ITV commentator, Martin Brundle, has moved in the frame as a replacement for Niki Lauda as head of the Jaguar Racing team, if reports in the Swiss press are anything to go by.

The former British driver is not the only one in contention with former team manager Gunther Steiner also asked to consider the switch to team boss after he was demoted from the role as technical director shortly after Lauda's dismissal. Just like Lauda, Steiner is under contract until the end of the 2003 season and while Niki opted for a suspected 3 and half million- dollar payout, rather than remain as a special advisor to Richard Parry Jones, it is unclear just what Steiner will do.

If Neil Reissler, Bobby Rahal and Niki Lauda had the chance to give 43 year old Brundle one word of advice as he ponders the new role it would be to think again before taking on what is commonly being referred to as a suicide mission. Nigel Mansell ahs also been linked to the job after comments that he would be prepared to make a return to the sport in a different role.

Irvine waiting on Jordan [23 Dec 2002|03:49pm]
[ mood | cynical ]

While his successor Mark Webber has been busy pounding the Barcelona circuit in Spain over the last month, former Jaguar driver Eddie Irvine has been holidaying at his Miami home, but he would rather be out there with his former colleagues getting ready for the upcoming 2003 championship season.

The Irishman was dumped by the Milton Keynes based squad at the beginning of last month after they decided to go with the fresh youthful approach represented by Australian driver Mark Webber and Brazilian rookie Antonio Pizzonia. There was talk for months prior to the announcement that Irvine would be leaving the team when his contract came to a close, however he is not ready to put the fast life of Formula One behind him altogether just yet.

Strong media speculation has been connecting Eddie to the Jordan Grand Prix team alongside Giancarlo Fisichella next season. With the hiring of a British driver, Eddie Jordan would receive more backing from sponsor Benson and Hedges, however there are still other drivers, such as Enrique Bernoldi and Felipe Massa, that can bring much needed funds as well.

Speaking to British tabloid the Sun, Eddie admitted that he is already missing the hustle and bustle of F1 life and at the moment, the main thing that is keeping him going is the hope of landing the Jordan role.

"The one thing which keeps me going is believing I still have a chance to drive for Jordan, the 37 year old told the Sun. I have unfinished business in Formula One and would love the chance to team up with Giancarlo because that would be a mega line-up. My whole life has revolved around racing and the spark is still there. It's been really weird not being part of winter testing. I miss trying to find ways of making the car go quicker. Working with engineers to evaluate various components on the car is fun. Miami is a great place and there's a lot of partying. It's easy to put on weight so I am continuing with the fitness program I used while driving."
