Frentzen impressed [12 Sep 2002|11:06pm]
[ mood | complacent ]

New Sauber signing Heinz-Harald Frentzen, has said that the Sauber Petronas team is a team on the move and will one day challenge the top teams for wins. Frentzen's comments come just weeks after being announced as Felipe Massa's replacement at the team with which he made his debut in 1994.

Frentzen would have raced at Sauber for the remainder of this season, had it not been for the small cockpit of the Sauber C21 it now emerges. Frentzen quit Arrows earlier this season following continued financial problems.

Frentzen's comments on Sauber were made to Autosport..

"It blew me away. "Sauber is the team of the future," he added.

"If you look at teams such as Williams or McLaren, they have had their peaks. Right now they are a tad behind and struggling to get in front again. Sauber is different.

Frentzen says there is a strong chance that he may be adding to his total of three race wins.

Webber still not signed up for next year [12 Sep 2002|11:10pm]
[ mood | complacent ]

Minardi's Mark Webber has impressed greatly in this, his debut season and is tipped for a Jaguar seat for next season. Jaguar have been in talks with the Australian, but insist no contract has been signed yet.

Niki Lauda was asked about Webber's future at Jaguar, and said: "We have not yet come to an agreement.

"Stoddart still has an option on Mark and we haven’t been able to find a compromise so far. We don’t know what decision we will take regarding Webber and Irvine."

Irvine is paid £7 million a season by Jaguar owners Ford, and this is being seen as too much, many bosses and the Ulsterman is therefore reportedly on his way out.

Tomas Enge: Drugs boost [12 Sep 2002|11:15pm]
[ mood | surprised ]

The Monza paddock was buzzing after the revelation that F3000 front-runner and Prost substitute last season, Tomas Enge, had tested positive for banned drugs. Arden Team principal Christian Horner held a press conference at Monza this afternoon.

Enge had a sample taken last month at the Hungaroring and was positive for a banned drug, the second sample (taken at the same time) is waiting to be tested as soon as Enge appeals.

Horner said this afternoon that Enge is "insistent that he did not knowingly take any illegal substance or drug and is completely shocked and surprised to have tested positive".

Asked whether the substance was cannabis, Horner simply said that "the drug" was in no way performance enhancing."

The World Council will consider the results of the tests on October 1.

McNish happy about future [12 Sep 2002|11:23pm]
[ mood | cynical ]

Despite being dropped from Toyota's 2003 line-up after a relatively strong season, Allan McNish says that he holds no grudges and will move on to something new next season. Whether that is in Formula 1 or not remains to be seen.

McNish was Toyota's test driver in 2001 (having worked with the team in 2000) alongside Mika Salo and claimed a full-time race seat for 2002, but was last month told that he would not be included in the team's 2003 line-up.

"Obviously I was disappointed about the decision and a little surprised especially that neither Mika nor I will be there next year. However it was the natural end to my current three-year contract and I can say that Ove Andersson acted in a very professional manner throughout. But it is a pity I will not get the benefit of all the groundwork I have put in throughout the years with the car and the team. " he said.

"As for the future, we are in discussions, there are some options in F1 and some outside as well. I have been pleasantly surprised by the number of teams interested in me for 2003. Although you will need to wait some weeks before knowing what is happening I think it will be worth the wait. I am confident."

Audi and Bentley are keen on signing the Scotsman for 2003 for their GT cars.
